I don't write "song fics." Song fics are little pieces that include huge chunks of a song between the original thoughts. Nope. I don't write song fics. What I do, though, is extract an entire story from a mere couple of lines. Usually, I never even show those lines. I'm a fan of naming my fics after songs, though. It's easier than thinking of an obscure title that I may want to change in the future. Anyway, here's a list of songs I've reflected on and the inspiration that has weaseled its way into my fics.
The Rest of the Sun Belongs to Me by Sonata Arctica
The story, The Rest of the Sun Belongs to Me, was my first multiple chapter story that actually had some meat in it. So far, it's the only fic that stands completed at eleven full length chapters. [this means not counting the drabble compilation or the triple chaptered In Black and White.] The plot stemmed from an idea I couldn't get out of my head. The basic idea was that Jess and Rory were in a car accident. Not exactly the most original idea if you consider the episode Teach Me Tonight. Instead, I tossed in a fatal injury for Jess and a health scare for Rory. Jess lingers on the brink of death for most of the story until it comes to an abrupt end after his heart stops. The lyrics were inserted at the end of the story merely to explain the title and the motive behind it. More or less, Rory is the ray of light that keeps Jess going.
I have no feelings, there is no more sunlight.
The darkest hour is now here.
I must have lost it for good, staying here without a fight.
Out in the cold and windy night.
Still waiting for a sign.
I know there is still a day for me.
One short moment is still enough for me.
Bring me life with your ray of light.
If only I found a small piece of the fallen sun
Originally, and not many people know this, I had thought of killing Jess off. Halfway through the story, I decided to not use that ending and stuck with flipping the relationship perils in the sequel: Somewhere Over the Sun.
